In a masonry chimney the firebox is built with special firebrick set in high temperature refractory cement to contain the high temperatures. Anytime the firebox brick are cracked or mortar joints are compromised it is recommended the firebox be repaired or rebuilt. In a prefabricated fireplace the firebox is built with special high temperature panels that can crack and need to be replaced.
